Uganda Christian University (UCU) has renamed its former Bishop Tucker Library in honour of Bishop Dunstan Bukenya, the institution’s first University Secretary, recognizing his transformative role in shaping the university since its founding in 1997.
The move celebrates Bukenya’s pivotal contributions, including the establishment of the UCU School of Law in 1998, which has grown into one of the university’s flagship programmes and a cornerstone of Uganda’s legal profession.
“Bukenya was busy writing the law curriculum without a legal background in his office alone,” recalled Rev Canon Dr Alex Kagume, UCU’s first Academic Registrar.
“Many of us feel proud of him that his vision stands to bear fruit.”
Bukenya’s vision for the School of Law focused on integrating legal practice with Christian ethics and values, a commitment that earned him recognition as a champion of legal education in Uganda.
His work laid a strong foundation for a faculty that continues to influence the country’s justice sector.
The renaming ceremony underscores UCU’s commitment to honouring leaders whose foresight, service, and dedication have significantly shaped the university’s growth and development.
